LeafDappled

Product & UI design

The project aims to harness the therapeutic effects of nature to alleviate the stress of daily life. Its core concept revolves around an art installation - a lamp that reflects the serene beauty of sunlight filtering through leaves. Its design is intended to infuse tranquility into users' work and living environments, reducing stress and promoting relaxation. In this project, my primary responsibilities include conceptualizing the product, designing its aesthetics and functionality, as well as crafting the UI of the app.

Field research

In this project, studying the formation of natural light and shadows is crucial as it aids in creating a genuine natural environment and ambiance. Understanding the direction, intensity of natural light, and the distribution of shadows allows for a more accurate simulation of outdoor lighting conditions, enhancing the authenticity of the design. By mimicking the variations in natural light and shadow effects, we can amplify users' emotional experiences, generating a more appealing and captivating result.

Conformation

Initially, I planned to design the lamp as a pendant light resembling wind chimes, aiming to capture the serene sensation of a gentle breeze "under the trees." The overall lamp would also sway delicately with the wind, creating the enchanting effect of dancing shadows indoors. However, during the later stages of production, we encountered difficulties in securely integrating the gesture sensor as per the original plan. As a result, I revised the product's appearance, giving priority to ensuring the proper functionality of the gesture sensor.

Gesture control

Gesture control offers a natural and engaging way of interaction, mimicking everyday actions like waving, enhancing the user experience with familiarity. Simultaneously, it aims to motivate users to be active and break the cycle of prolonged sitting, promoting overall well-being. This design not only facilitates convenient interaction but also encourages users to prioritize their health, fostering a positive lifestyle.

APP control

The interactive application enhances user experience, allowing them to compensate for the limitations of gesture control and achieve various functions to control the lamp remotely. This application consists of three main features: adjusting the lamp's color, the number of light sources, and their positions. The design of the application follows minimalist principles with fresh colors, imparting a sense of tranquility. Its purpose is to recreate a natural ambiance, helping users experience the comfort of nature.

Physical prototype

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.
